ETH Zurich creates new lab
with Walt Disney
The ETH Zurich has announced a five-year research
and development initiative with The Walt Disney Company. ETH and
Disney plan to launch the initiative this coming October. A
research lab specializing in animation will be located at ETH
Zurich’s main campus in the heart of Zurich. Ed Catmull,
president of the Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, said:
“Creating the next generation of sophisticated technologies
requires long-term vision and collaboration with world-class
innovators.” To be Disney’s European location of choice is
further proof of ETH Zurich’s excellent international reputation
and the outstanding quality of its research and development. At
the new lab in Zurich, a staff of about 20 will conduct applied
research in close cooperation with ETH Zurich’s Department of
Computer Science, mostly with the Visual Computing and the
Computer Graphics laboratories. The emphasis will be on research
in computer animation, geometric modelling, computational
photography, image generation, video processing, artificial
intelligence and robotics. In addition to the R&D collaboration,
the highly qualified Disney scientists and engineers will also
be invited to teach classes in ETH’s graduate and doctorate
programmes.
